About Us

A group of Uvalde women met in February of 1903 to form a new civic organization: El Progreso Club. They set three goals for themselves: self-improvement, civic improvement and founding a public library. Since that time El Progreso has lived up to its name as a progressive model for library services in Southwest Texas.

In 2004, the library moved into a new building on West Main St. This new facility not only serves the recreational and informational needs of residents of Uvalde and surrounding communities, it is also an archives for a ten county area and there are plans to open a regional museum as well.

El Progreso Memorial Library is a 501c(3) non-profit corporation. It has a nine member governing board. The library contracts with the City of Uvalde, Uvalde County and Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District to provide library services.
